Quotes
Young Orderly: So what's this guy's story?
Old Orderly: Cop killer. Regular people killer. General all around waste of skin.
Young Orderly: So, what are you scared of? Guy's a freaking vegetable. I mean, what's he going to do, run over you with his big plastic wheel?
Old Orderly: What the hell happened, Chuck? Where's Modell?
Young Orderly: [under Modell's influence] He had to go.
[Mulder is briefing assembled Marshalls on dealing with Robert Modell]
Mulder: Okay, look. This is all you need to know. Do not trust this man. Do not talk to him. Do not engage him in conversation. Even if he is unarmed, approach him with extraordinary caution and then only with adequate backup.
US Marshall: So what's adequate backup?
Mulder: Adequate backup? Every cop you can lay your hands on.
Todd: Hi. Can I help you?
[Clerk recognises Robert Modell from the news bulletin]
Robert Modell: Hi.
[Clerk reaches for baseball bat under the counter] You're not scared of snakes?
Todd: Huh?
Robert Modell: Looks like a timber rattler.
[Clerk sees the bat as a snake] Hold on tight to the neck now. Don't let it bite you. Don't drop it; you drop it, he'll get you.
[Checks name badge] Todd? Do you think I could get some service now?
Todd: [distracted] Yeah...
Robert Modell: Go into the back, and put the snake down.
[Clerk, with a death grip on the bat, carefully heads to the back room]
[Therapist discribes Robert Modell as a model patient]
Mulder: He's a very considerate man.
[Robert Modell calls for Mulder]
Mulder: Yeah?
Robert Modell: Two words — It's... Alive...
[Laughs]
Mulder: I don't feel like playing your game right now, Modell.
Robert Modell: Touchy? Look Mulder, there's something I need you to hear.
Mulder: Tell it to me in person, Modell.
Robert Modell: No, seriously. Listen to me.
Mulder: No, you listen to me. Either you come back here on your own or I drag your sorry ass back on the bumper of my car.
Scully: [to Trace Agent] Time?
Trace Agent: [to Scully] Four more seconds.
Robert Modell: When did you turn into Clint Eastwood?
Scully: [to Mulder] Don't let him rope you in.
Robert Modell: Stop talking like a tough guy and pay attentiom. I know you're tracing this call. I don't care. I have something —
Scully: [to Mulder] Mulder hang up the phone.
Robert Modell: — I need you to hear. Mulder, are you going to listen —
[Mulder hangs up]
Trace Agent: We got it.
Skinner: Where is he? Where's Modell.
Todd: [under Modell's influence] He had to go.
[Nathan Bowman's living room is covered in painted ideograms. The lawyer who prosecuted Robert Modell is seated on the lounge, coated from head to foot in Cerulean Blue paint and quite dead]
Mulder: I'm going to take a wild stab here and guess. This... is a clue.
[Scully opens Nathan Bowman's mouth and paint flows out]
Scully: It appears as if he died from ingesting paint. I imagine that he did all of this and then drank what was left.
Female Agent: Sir. It's not a manifesto. It's the same single ideogram over and over.
Skinner: Which is what?
Female Agent: Well the hand it's in is pretty sloppy, but I think it's supposed to be Kitsunegari... Fox Hunt.
Scully: Fox Mulder...
Mulder: Well, that's a little on the nose, don't you think?
[Robert Modell is calling to an officer but the officer can't see him]
Robert Modell: Dead ahead. Straight in front of you. Buddy, I'm straight in front of you. What do you want me to do, draw you a map?
Mulder: Linda Bowman? I'm Fox Mulder.
Linda Bowman: Hi. Uh, you're my 12:15?
Scully: Mulder?
Mulder: Why didn't Modell just kill those two cops? What was to stop him?
Scully: Well hopefully he was incapable.
Mulder: As in too tired?
Scully: Well we've seen that before with him.
Mulder: Maybe. I don't know. Something's just not making sense.
Scully: Mulder, what happened? Where's Modell?
Mulder: [under Modell's influence] He had to go.
Scully: How are you feeling?
Mulder: Oh, aside from the utter grinding humiliation that comes from knowing I let our suspect go, pretty good.
Scully: It could have happened to anyone, Mulder.
Scully: Your husband talked with you a lot about it.
[Robert Modell's trial]
Linda Bowman: Well, as I said, he was proud. I guess he felt that it was his brush with greatness.
Scully: Is it possible that he could have mentioned you to Robert Modell?
Linda Bowman: No. No, I sincerely doubt it. You see, Nathan and I, we were only two months ago.
Mulder: How long did you know him?
Linda Bowman: Two months and two days. Why wait when it's true love. You never know how long you have.
Mulder: No you don't.
Linda Bowman: It's not like Nathan was impulsive or flighty. I don't want to paint him as that.
Mulder: He was... true blue.
[Linda nods] Thank you.
[Mulder claims that Linda Bowman killed her husband and was flaunting the fact in her interview]
Skinner: You're suspended until such time I'm confident your judgement is sound. Give me your weapon.
Mulder: Who are you afraid I'm going to point it at?
Scully: Mulder, I think you should do what he says.
[Mulder hands Skinner his gun. Linda Bowman steps into the hallway]
Linda Bowman: Excuse me. Would it be possible for me to have something to drink? Water?
Skinner: Yes ma'am. I'll have somebody come right in.
Mulder: I'll prove it.
[He turns and leaves]
Skinner: Agent Mulder?
Mulder: Go fetch her some water!
Skinner: [busting into the locked room] ON THE FLOOR, MODELL!
Robert Modell: Hey, it's Mel Coolie.
Skinner: ON YOUR FACE! DO IT NOW! I SAID NOW!
Robert Modell: I have a gun.
[Robert Modell turns to Skinner, pointing his index finger. Skinner sees it as a gun and fires on Modell]
Scully: That's one hell of a plan, Mulder. A serial killer makes us believe that he's guilty in turn diverting the suspicion away from the real estate lady? Well, he had me going.
Mulder: Okay, look. You do me a favour, Scully. You give me a call when you think I've come to my senses, all right?
[Mulder witnesses Scully shoot herself and turns to see Linda Bowman holding a gun on him]
Scully: She wants you to shoot me. She knows you'll never forgive yourself.
Mulder: SHUT UP!
Scully: Listen to me.
Mulder: SHUT UP!
Scully: Your mother is Teena. Your sister is Samantha.
Mulder: SHUT UP!
Scully: Modell warned you. Don't play her game.
[Scully fires over Mulder's shoulder taking out Linda Bowman. Mulder turns to see Linda Bowman on the ground and turns back to see Scully where he had previously been seeing Linda Bowman]
Linda Bowman: You think you can hold me...
Skinner: You've won her game.
Mulder: How come I feel like I lost?
